I was born in Brooklyn, New York. The beautiful borough of my birth has many distinct neighborhoods and amazing diversity that facilitated my solid growth and development. I grew up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, a block away from the important tree-lined thoroughfare, Eastern Parkway. As a young teen, I attended Brooklyn Technical High School as a communications major. Later, I went on to Brooklyn College and majored in Sociology and Urban Studies. From the age of 17, I volunteered my time and talent for a host of neighborhood activities that strove to keep my community attractive and empowered.
I have volunteered at Hale House where I fed and read to special needs babies; raised funds and planned workshops for the International Woode Foundation; presided as recording secretary and member of the Lincoln Civic Block Association; served as Tri-State President of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials; elected Vice President of Education and remains charter member of Transmasters, a chapter of Toastmasters International. Though I proudly call New York City my home, I love traveling around the world, especially to different parts of the Caribbean. It is my ambition to visit each one of the fifty states of the United States of America. There is nothing more powerful for me than to actively participate in my own learning. I have over thirty years of professional and business experience working in transportation, marketing research, sales and advertising.
Using my accumulated knowledge, I enjoy teaching various business courses. A published poet; I also wrote, produced, and directed a two-hour riveting educational play about HIV and AIDS and its horrific effect on a young couple living in Brooklyn. I donated most of the shows’ profits to the Balm in Gilead and the Brooklyn AIDS Task Force. In 2010, the Carib News published, “Papa’s Letters,” a four part series focusing on the exquisite love letters between my grandfather (I called him Papa) and grandmother beginning in 1913. Because of the outstanding response by readers to the series, I expanded the series into my first book. I am so proficient at events planning and have organized and sponsored workshops, seminars, block parties, special celebrations and dinners. I am the daughter of Judith M. Lovell, a retired New York City special education teacher and the late Milton M. Lovell, former Chief Microbiologist. I am the mother of Kwame C. Prescod, Sr. and Ayanna E. Prescod and the grandmother of Kwame Jr. and Kristopher Prescod.
